The long-awaited acceleration lane for Lihu’e-bound Kaumuali’i Highway traffic coming out of Maluhia Road (Tree Tunnel) opened yesterday.
Kaua’i County Police traffic Sgt. Mark Scribner urged motorists to use caution around the intersection as drivers get used to the new merging.
“They’re just going to have to drive with more care and be a little patient until everybody’s used to the situation and the roadways as they’re being constructed,” said Scribner.
He predicted that morning rush-hour traffic will still create a bottleneck in the area, though it will be nearer a bridge on the Lihu’e side of the intersection.
Until more roads are built, traffic jams will continue to occur, and patience will be required, he noted.
“We just have to be courteous to one another, and be patient,” Scribner advised.
While the acceleration lane looked ready for use, it was awaiting finishing touches before opening, state highway officials said last month.
