Bobby Tasaka
Bobby S. Tasaka of Hanalei, Kaua’i, died at home on Dec. 19, 2001, at the age of 94.
Born in Hanalei, Kaua’i on Dec. 23, 1906, he was a retired Laborer with the County of Kaua’i and also a Taro Farmer.
He is survived by: by his wife: Hatsue Tasaka of Hanalei, Kaua’i; two sons: Alan (Suzanne) Tasaka and Richard Tasaka, both of Hanalei, Kaua’i; daughter: Susan (Dwight) Morishige of Hanalei, Kaua’i; six grandchildren; sister: Blanche (Roy) Masumura of Honolulu, Oahu; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral service has been scheduled at 4 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 26, at the Kapa’a Hongwanji Mission; officiating the service will the Rev. Takata. Casual attire is suggested and flowers omitted.
Arrangements are being handled by Garden Island Mortuary, Ltd.
Robert Clifton Bailey
Robert Clifton Bailey, “Mr. Bailey,” principal of Kapa’a Elementary School, died Jan. 19, 2001.
He was born in Honolulu on July 2, 1950. Bailey graduated from Punahou School in 1968, from Willamette University in 1972 and attained his masters in Education from the University of Hawai’i in 1978. He was an accomplished athlete, competing on Punahou football, basketball and baseball teams. In 1967 and ’68, he was the IHL batting champion, and he attended Willamette on a baseball scholarship. He coached football and baseball at Punahou, varsity football at Kapa’a and youth basketball and baseball.
Mr. Bailey and his family moved to Kilauea, Kaua’i in 1981. He began his career with the Department of Education as a counselor at Hanalei and Kilauea Elementary Schools and then at Kapa’a Intermediate and High Schools. He was vice principal at Kapa’a High and Intermediate, principal at Waimea Canyon and then became principal of Kapa’a Elementary in 1989.
At Kapa’a, then one of the largest elementary schools in the state, Mr. Bailey, and the faculty and staff, and the parents established “schools-within-the-school.” This model builds upon the strengths and passions of teachers, addresses the diversity of learning styles of individual children and gives choices, within a larger context of standards and values of public education, to parents for their children.
Bailey served on countless education related committees and boards. He spearheaded several groups dedicated to educational reform. Bailey’s favorite civic activity was membership on the Kapa’a Rotary. He was particularly active in the Kaua’i Rotary Youth Foundation program, and the successful Taste of Hawaii fundraisers, which he chaired in 2000.
He is survived by his wife Fahy and their son, Kaulana, mother Amelia (Robert F.) of Honolulu, one sister, Beryl (Gary) Blaich; three brothers: James of Kilauea, Speed (Pauline) of Honolulu and John (Karla) of Kilauea; six nieces, one nephew and two generations of Kapa’a students.
On Kaua’i a memorial service will be held this Thursday, Jan. 25, at 4:30 p.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church in Kapa’a.
There will be a service in Honolulu on Saturday, Jan. 27, at 3 p.m. at the Punahou School Chapel.
