It is good news that the funding for the University of Hawaii will bounce out of last place nationally under the next (and last) biennial budget of the Cayetano Administration. Yet students upon completion of at least one semester carrying 12 credits with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 at UH-Manoa, may wish to attend an informational meeting about the National Student Exchange Program to be held Jan. 23, 2001, at 7 p.m., in Campus Center 308 (parents welcome).
Students in the exchange program pay either UH tuition or the in-state (resident) tuition at one of approximately 170 mainland schools for one or two semesters.
Here are some of the schools that these lucky UH-Manoa students have a good chance of getting as their first choice: Montana State (Bozeman), Central Washington, Oregon State, Simon Fraser (Vancouver), Southwest Texas State, Hunter (New York City: no dorms) (takes 7), Virginia Commonwealth, NC State, College of Charleston, East Carolina, Howard (District of Columbia), Bowling Green State (Ohio), Northern Arizona, UNLV (takes 5), U Nevada Reno, UMASS (Boston & Amherst), U Maryland College Park, and Cal States (Hayward, Sonoma, and Northridge). Here are some long shots: Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (takes 1 or 2), U Washington (takes 2), Binghamton University (New York State) (takes 2), San Jose State (takes 1 only) & Cal State L.A. (takes 2 or 3), and U Arizona (takes 1 only).
Of the above schools, Cal State Hayward has the most diverse undergraduate population, in terms of ethnic diversity, with 29 percent Asian American, 11 percent African American, 11 percent Hispanic American, and 4 percent international; unless you count Howard (District of Columbia) (74 percent African American, 21.2 percent international, 2.3 percent Asian American, 1 percent Hispanic American, 1.2 percent other, and 0.2 percent Native American).
In terms of undergraduate student population, the largest half dozen, in reverse order, are: U Washington (34,450), U Arizona (33,573), U Maryland College Park (32,000), NC State (28,011), Cal State Northridge (27,653) and San Jose State (27,000).
At Cal State Hayward, 35 percent of the undergraduates are age 25 or older. At Howard (District of Columbia), there are 3,980 undergraduate & graduate men, and 6,280 undergraduate & graduate women. At Sonoma State, there are 2,011 full-time undergraduate & graduate men, and 4,114 full-time undergraduate & graduate men.
It’s no wonder that Secretary of State-elect Colin Powell spoke to Howard (District of Columbia) students about opportunities in the Foreign Service. During the oral assessment of prospective candidates earlier this month in San Francisco (the written portion of the examination may be taken in Hawaii or overseas, but the oral assessment takes place only in California, Texas, and the District of Columbia), three of the four examiners were female, while the lead examiner was African American.
