Vicky and I extend our warmest greetings to the people of Hawai’i and wish everyone a happy holiday, including the many families throughout our islands for whom Christmas carries a special significance.
This traditional holiday season is a time when families, friends and neighbors unite to celebrate their religious traditions and spiritual roots. For members of Christian religious, Christmas is a centuries-old holy day. For others, Christmas is a festive holiday marked by family gatherings and the exchange of gifts.
It is also time when all of us, drawing upon our beliefs and traditions, can reach out with compassion to the less fortunate. Like the ancient Hawaiians who embraced all into their ohana, we must continue to care deeply about each other. We need always remember that it is the aloha spirit and tradition of caring that sets Hawaii apart as a community.
Let us continue to work together to make sure that the spirit of aloha is preserved, strengthened and passed on to our children. May this holiday season prove especially rewarding for each of you.
Aloha and Happy Holidays, Benjamin J. Cayetano, Governor, State of Hawaii
