HANAPEPE — As if her team had just won the Kaua’i Interscholastic
Federation championship, head coach Ui Smith’s Waimea girls’ soccer team let
out yelps of joy and unbridled excitement. The ladies then dumped cups of water
on Smith.
“They’ve been working so hard and really focusing in practice,”
Smith said. “I’m so proud of them.”
While the girls hadn’t won the title,
the Menehunes had just defeated defending KIF champion Kapa’a 2-0 on Saturday,
registered their first win of the season and given Smith her first-ever varsity
victory.
“Amazed is the best word to use right now,” Smith said. “These
girls just put together a great effort and are starting to see what teamwork
can do.”
Michelle Takashima scored first for Waimea. The goal was assisted
by Ashley Hori, on a corner kick. Hori also assisted the other goal; Laurese
Rosare got the score.
Kapa’a’s loss leaves it 1-2 on the season, identical
to Waimea, and puts pressure on each team to get the best of Kaua’i in the next
two weeks. The Red Raiders are 2-0 on the season.

In a physical, tightly contested game, the Warriors (3-0-1) and
Menehunes (1-2-1) played to a tie at Hanapepe Ball Park Saturday. Kapa’a
dominated the time of possession, but could never stick the ball in the goal.
The Warriors had 18 shots in all, but Menehune goalkeeper James Marques proved
too tough to score on.
“We were disappointed to have played well and not
score any goals,” Warriors coach Wade Bosworth said. “We had plenty of chances
but none of them went our way. But that’s what makes soccer such a fun and
unpredictable sport.”
In other boys’ varsity action, Kaua’i and Island
School squared off. The score was not available to The Garden Island by
deadline, however, the Red Raiders won the schools’ first meeting
15-0.

Waimea 2, Kapa’a 1
The Menehunes (1-2) picked up
their first win of the season with a solid effort against the Warriors (1-2)
Saturday.
Each of Waimea’s goals were scored by Drew Desmarias. The first
came at the 20-minute mark of the first half. After the intermission, Desmarias
scored on a breakaway, as his shot on goal found the back rightside of the
net.
Waimea actually was missing a few players for the game, and had no
substitutes on the bench.

Waimea 0, Kapa’a 0
Though each
team had its share of chances to score, again no ball found the net.
“It
was a tough game,” Menehunes coach Bill Prinzing said.
