Library closures
Most public libraries will be closed the next three days in observance of Christmas, with one exception on Kaua’i.
Princeville Public Library will be open Saturday, as will four other branches on other islands in the Hawai’i State Public Library System. Then they’ll close for three days before reopening Dec. 27.
All other public libraries on Kaua’i will be closed tomorrow, Sunday and Monday. They’ll reopen Dec. 26.
Senior I.D. cards issued Jan. 2
Kaua’i County’s Agency on Elderly Affairs will issue senior identification cards Jan. 2 from 1 to 4 p.m. at its office (suite 105) in the Mo’ikeha Building on Rice Street.
The cards, for people 60 and older, entitle holders to reduced fares on the Kaua’i Bus.
Seniors 65 and older are also eligible for discounts from participating merchants.
Information from seniors that is required to obtain a card is kept confidential and used by Agency on Elderly Affairs for statistics and reports, and to help identify seniors who may qualify for benefits and services, officials said.
The senior I.D. cards are a service of the agency and are issued the first Tuesday of each month. Additional information is available at 241-6400.
Words to the wise for air travelers
The holidays are the heaviest period for air travel, which brings these suggestions from the state Department of Transportation on how to negotiate Hawaii’s airports with a minimum of stress: l Allow ample time for getting to the airport.
l Parking lots may be crowded. Have someone drop you off at curbside, or use a taxi or shuttle to get to the airport. And remember that curbsides are for loading and unloading only. Unattended vehicles will be cited and towed.
l Travelers should arrive 60 to 90 minutes before the scheduled departure of their domestic flights and two hours ahead of the takeoff of their international flights.
Check with airlines for check-in requirements and flight information.
Anticipate longer lines than usual at ticket counters.
l Avoid carrying wrapped gifts through security checkpoints. Pack them in your luggage, or wrap the lid and box separately so that the contents can easily be inspected.
l Use curbside check-ins whenever possible to avoid long lines at counters.
l Check in as many bags as possible. Carry-on luggage causes delays at security checkpoints.
l When picking up passengers from the airport, arrive 15 to 30 minutes after the scheduled arrival time, to allow passengers time to retrieve their bags and be waiting curbside.
