Two separate actions in the past week involving Kaua’i County demonstrate the island’s attention to its past, present and future.
The past: The county Planning Commission delayed a decision on Verizon Wireless’ application to erect a cellular telephone antenna, largely because of the proposed location: Kilauea Japanese Cemetery.
The present: Kayaking is popular on Wailua River. To let it continue until the state Department of Land and Natural Resources finalizes rules on the activity, the Planning Commission continued the permit granted earlier to a kayak operator.
The future: As Kaua’i grows and motor vehicle traffic increases accordingly, opportunities for manpowered land transportation – namely walking and bicycling – are at risk of being overrun. So the County Council turned county officials loose to request and hopefully receive $400,000 from the federal government to help complete the Lydgate Park bike and walking path.
In these cases, the council and Planning Commission have done the right things to keep Kaua’i looking ahead without forgetting where it’s been.
