The Kaua`i County Council has stepped away from the table, at least officially, for the rest of the year.
Jan. 4, 2001 is the date for the next scheduled council meeting. But it’s not impossible for the council members to officially get together sooner than that if they need to.
“They can call a special meeting. There’s a certain process to follow. It’s not like nobody’s home,” county attorney Hartwell Blake said. “It has not been done often, but it has been done. There would have to be extraordinary circumstances.” The council couldn’t meet without giving a six-day notice according to the state’s sunshine law, said county clerk Peter Nakamura.
Nakamura said there were no special Christmas-season council meetings during the past two years.
Although the council isn’t meeting for two and a half weeks, the clerical support staff will be working.
“We have to prepare for next year,” Nakamura said.
