As the United States struggles toward a conclusion of its presidential election saga, Americans can be happy they aren’t in the same mess as The Philippines, whose president is facing an impeachment trial on charges of bribery and corruption.
The purported scandal is rooted partially in a seamy story of profiteering via gambling. President Joseph Estrada allegedly took $8 million skimmed from an illegal numbers racket. He also is accused of pocketing $2.6 from tobacco taxes.
Of course, it wasn’t that long ago that the U.S. had to deal with its own impeachment proceedings. The more recent controversy over Florida’s voting for president has not been pleasant, either, nor anything to be proud of if claims of questionable electioneering are true. But citizens of The Philippines would probably trade that predicament for the one in which their already-elected leader is characterized as a shady operator.
