SUNSET BEACH – Sunny Garcia of Hawai’i claimed a record fifth Vans Triple Crown
of Surfing title Sunday without even getting wet.
Garcia was declared the
victor when Kaipo Jaquias of Hawai’i, his closest title competitor, was
eliminated in the pre-trials of the Mountain Dew Gerry Lopez Pipe Masters, the
final event of the surfing series.
Garcia, 30, won the first two events,
the G-Shock Hawaiian Pro last Wednesday and the Rip Curl Pro last month.
If
Garcia wins the Pipe Masters, he would become the first person to win all three
Triple Crown events in the same season.
Garcia was awarded the Association
of Surfing Professionals world title in October.
