That was a great big “ouch” heard last Saturday night as the University of Hawai’i finished its football season with a two-point loss to the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. It was the final indignity in a 3-9 season that was a long fall from the year before, when the Warriors made a bowl appearance.
But all is not lost for UH sports fans. The women’s volleyball team blasted through the second round of the NCAA tournament last Friday and is awaiting a match with Long Beach State in this week’s West Regionals. Long Beach is the only team to beat the Rainbow Wahine this year, but they are ranked third in the nation and are the favorites to advance out of the West en route to a possible NCAA title.
The state already has one national volleyball champion for the 2000 season. Hawai’i Pacific University captured the NCAA Division II women’s title last Saturday for the second consecutive year. So you go, Wahine. Make yourselves and the islands doubly proud.
