LIHU’E — In its two preseason contests, the Kaua’i boys
had been somewhat predictable. Senior Cole Brandeburg would score the goals,
and junior Jacob Minei would deliver the assists.
The Raiders spread their
offensive wings a bit Saturday afternoon at Vidinha Stadium.
Nine Kaua’i
players scored, as the Red Raiders defeated Island School 15-0 to open Kaua’i
Interscholastic Federation play.
“They’ve got a lot of freshman playing
over there [at Island School],” Kaua’i coach Mark Brandeburg said. “But they
came out and played hard the whole game. It was good to see that.”
Island
School’s effort, however, did not keep Kaua’i from scoring goals.
“It was
good to see some of our other guys get in on the scoring action,” Brandeburg
said. “And it’s a nice chance to let all of our boys play.”
Goals were
scored by Cole Brandeburg (3), Mason Chan (3), Randy Gaoiran (2), Kevin
Fujimoto (2), Jacob Minei, Kalen Carveiro, Kodi Toulon, Jon Ching and Bennett
Medeiros

In what might have been the game of
the day, the Warriors held off a furious late charge from Menehunes’ attackers
to record the win.
“It was a really well played game,” Kapa’a coach Wade
Bosworth said. “They [Waimea] had three or four corner [kicks] late in the
game. It was nerve wracking.”
Especially considering the Warriors were
playing without their regular goalkeeper. Graham Kovarik suffered a concussion
during preseason play and was forced to sit out Saturday’s contest.
“So we
just had two kids in the net,” Bosworth said. “One in the first half and one in
the second.”
Kapa’a’s Keoni Nakano netted both of the Warriors’ goals. The
first came on a corner kick. The second was assisted by Danny
Rittmeister.
The Warriors will play Kaua’i next Saturday.

Kapa’a began the defense of its KIF title with the win
over Waimea.
The Menehunes got on the board first, however. Senior Ashley
Hori connected from about 25 yards out on a free kick to put Waimea ahead 1-0
early.
Kapa’a evened the score just before the end of the half, however.
Then the Warriors got two goals in the second half to put the game away.
Unfortunately, the Kapa’a coach could not be reached by press time.
“We
were proud of how we played,” Waimea coach Ui Smith said.
