Sharks are lurking off the coastlines of Kaua’i. That’s nothing new. But incidents like the one last Wednesday, in which two sharks were seen attacking and devouring a green sea turtle near Brennecke Beach, serve as reminders that people are possible shark victims themselves when they enter the water.
The Kaua’i County Water Safety Department quickly closed off more than a mile of coastline for 24 hours to help guard against humans possibly meeting the same fate as the turtle. But there’s little else that can be done ahead of time to keep people from being shark bait, other than to heed the advice of one official who noted this week that sharks “are always out there.”
