The first day of the 2000 Nissan State Volleyball tournament being held on Oahu
is over. Punahou School’s Hemmeter Fieldhouse and the University of Hawai’i at
Manoa’s Stan Sheriff Center were the venues, and neither was kind to Kaua’i
High School.
Both the boys and the girls lost their opening matches. Each
will play again within their respective pools
Wednesday.
Boys
The Raiders are in Pool D with Pearl City and
Maui. Tuesday, Kaua’i fell to Pearl City 12-15, 15-4, 15-5. It was a
heartbreaking loss, considering the Raiders had battled to a tough win in the
first set.
Senior Mark Rodrigues led the Raiders with 12 kills. Pearl
City’s Tyler Padayao had a match-high 14 kills. His teammate, Matt Pascua, had
11.
Pearl City also defeated Maui Tuesday, making it the Pool D champion.
Kaua’i and Maui will play Wednesday at 3 p.m. with a trip to the state
quarterfinals on the line.
Girls
The Lady Raiders also are in
Pool D, with McKinley and Molokai. Tuesday, Kaua’i fell to McKinley 15-13,
6-15, 15-13. Raider spirits were high following the second game, but the girls
could not pull through in the final set.
Junior Tiana Lum-Tucker led Kaua’i
with 11 kills. Senior Kim Downing put nine away. McKinley’s Cherie Matoon and
Kari Shimomura each registered seven kills.
McKinley also defeated Molokai
Tuesday, giving it the Pool D championship.
The Raiders, much like the
boys, are not out of the running, however. A victory at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday
over Molokai will send Kaua’i to the state semifinals.
