From TGI ReportsLike its varsity-level mentor, the Waimea junior varsity
football team ended the Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation season a perfect
6-0.
The Menehunes defeated Kaua’i 14-0 at their Friday night homecoming
game to wrap up the blemish-free season. The Red Raiders ended the season 1-5,
their lone victory coming last week against Kapa’a.
Defense, actually,
appeared to be the name of this game. All of the Waimea scoring came in a
five-minute span of the second quarter, and the Menehunes’ offense scored just
once.
That touchdown came at the 9:53 mark when Rayson Cacal found Tyson
Fernandez on a 30-yard pass play. Corey Rita added the extra point for the 7-0
lead.
At the 4:14 mark of the second, Waimea’s Jay Parina intercepted a
Kaua’i pass and returned it 43 yards for the score. Rita again connected on the
point after to end the scoring.
While they scored just 14 points Friday,
the Menehunes have enjoyed some dominating offensive efforts this season.
Waimea’s average victory margin was nearly 33 points. And the team hung 62
points on Kapa’a October 20 at Vidinha Stadium.
The Menehunes showed a
dominating ground game that proved their varsity and junior varsity coaches
were on the same page. Freshman Jordan Dizon, who began the season scoring at
will at the JV level, moved up to the varsity near the end of the
season.
Sophomore Rayson Cacal matched Dizon’s numbers, and will surely be
a force at the varsity level next season.
As good as the offense was,
Waimea also displayed a spirited defensive unit. The Menehunes allowed just 21
points all season.
Needless to say, with next year’s varsity returners and
the graduation of this year’s JV players to the next level, Waimea’s hold on
the KIF has a good chance to continue.
