The Maukana has joined Young Brothers’ seven other barges
transporting essential cargo between the islands. An eighth vessel, the Foss
PTS 286-1, has been brought in to handle anticipated heavy holiday traffic, the
company announced.
“Our cargo loads provide evidence of Hawai’i’s improving
economic activity,” said Glenn Hong, president of Young Brothers.
“The
Maukana is a needed addition to the Young Brothers fleet, so our company is
able to handle the current cargo volume, allow for the cargo growth we are
projecting, and allow for regular maintenance of our other barges,” continued
Hong.
“In addition, we are fortunate that our parent company, Saltchuk
Resources, Inc., has extensive resources in the maritime industry, and is able
to provide us with an additional barge, the Foss PTS 286-1, during the holiday
months.”
The Maukana was modified for Young Brothers’ requirements, to
include a house, ballast system, and generator for lighting and refrigerated
containers.
The barge is carrying a wide variety of goods, including
containers with groceries and agricultural goods, palletized cargo, cars,
trucks, tractors, cranes and construction supplies.
Before taking off for
Kaua’i last week, the Maukana was the star of a Young Brothers’ customer
appreciation bash in celebration of the company’s 100th anniversary, at Pier 9
and Aloha Tower in Honolulu.
Young Brothers, Limited is celebrating its
100th year in business. Hawaiian Tug & Barge was formed as a sister company
to separate harbor operations and charter activities from Young Brothers’
interisland freight operations.
The Maukana, like the other Young Brothers’
barges, will call on Honolulu, Kaunakakai on Moloka’i, Lana’i City on Lana’i,
Kahului on Maui, Hilo and Kawaihae on the Big Island.
