Some day, when the members of Kaua’i High School’s girls volleyball team have
children of their own, they’ll be able to tell the story about how they did
something no one else could do for almost three decades.
This season, the
Red Raiders won the KIF regular-season championship and will represent their
conference in the state tournament. They did it by ending Waimea High’s reign
of 28 years as queen of girls interscholastic volleyball on Kaua’i.
As one
of the Red Raiders’ captains, Heather Roberts, told sports editor Jason Gallic
in a TGI article Friday about their accomplishment, “I wanted to be part of a
team that knocked Waimea off.”
Nothing against Waimea. Everybody can
appreciate a dynasty, and the Menehunes’ long run as champions was a tremendous
feat. But people love underdogs, too. And Kaua’i High finally had its day.
