Surfer magazine is set to feature “Hellman” surfer Laird Hamilton of Hanalei
and Maui riding an immense Tahitian tube on its February 2000
cover.
Hamilton traveled earlier this year to Tahiti to try out his tow-in
surfing expertise at the now-famous left-breaking wave known as Teahupoo
(cho-po).
Surfer magazine is calling his epic ride one “widely regarded as
the gnarliest wave ever ridden,” and is giving Hamilton the rare honor of a
pull-out front cover.
The break is located on the island of Tahiti and was
the scene of an ASP contest earlier this year. Keala Kennelly of Hanalei braved
her way to her second win in the women’s division at the event. A slam to the
coral reef at the shallow offshore break took the life of a Tahitian surfer
last spring.

shot.
Hamilton is best known for his fearless tow-in surfing in 35-foot
waves at “Jaws” on Maui’s northeast coast.
