put on by the Kaua’i High School marching band was beautiful.

Combined,
Kapa’a and Kaua’i recorded 10 turnovers and 170 yards in penalties in the
Warriors’ 31-7 season-ending victory. They finish the year a very respectable
3-3 in the Kaua’i Interscholastic Federation; Kaua’i dropped to 0-5 with one
more chance at victory next week at Waimea.
The teams plodded through a
scoreless, penalty-ridden first quarter, before Kapa’a unleashed the forces and
used the second period to effectively put the game out of reach.
Junior
Dahson Gonzales, who led all ball carriers with 89 yards on 11 tries, plowed
into the end zone from one yard out just 24 seconds into the quarter. Bradley
Wakuta connected on the first of his four successful point-after attempts to
give the Warriors the lead.
Wakuta connected on a 26-yard field goal five
minutes later to up the Warriors’ lead. Near the end of the half, Gonzales
again found the end zone, this time from six yards out, and the Warriors took
control.
As has been the case all season, the Raiders showed stints of
promise, piecing together a handful of solid drives. However, all but their
final effort ended either in a host of penalties or a turnover.
Quarterback
Kamo’i Refamonte accounted for the Kaua’i score when he pushed into the end
zone from one yard out with 4:14 remaining in the game.
Junior tailback
Jameson Smith did most of the work on the drive, however, as he racked up 83
yards over 16 carries on the night.
Kapa’a QB Dustin Mundon had another
solid outing, connecting on 4-of-8 passes for 61 yards. The most impressive
came just two minutes into the second half. The sophomore erased any momentum
created by the band when he found junior Randy Lawrence streaking across the
middle for a 43-yard TD.
Warrior LB Kalani Miyashiro again ate up the
opposing offense, and ran for 41 yards on 11 carries in the process.
The
Raiders did get a lift on the jayvee level, as the youngsters got their first
win of the season, 29-6. More on that game will appear in Monday’s Garden
Island.
