Forget about Elvis Presley. A new “Blue Hawai’i” that the legendary
singer/actor never dreamed about has University of Hawai’i officials almost as
giddy as the late star’s fans used to get.
The university this week
unveiled an IBM supercomputer – code-named Blue Hawa’i – that will explore the
inner workings of hurricanes by analyzing complex weather data associated with
the big blows.
Donated by IBM to UH, the heavyweight compuer puts UH on the
map by propelling “us to a leadership position in weather research and
prediction,” said Kenneth Mortimer, university president.
The supercomputer
is the latest feather in the cap of UH’s technological research initiatives,
which have attracted $103 million in government grants in the past five
years.
So don’t step on those blue suede shoes.
