It wasn’t so much that Waimea’s Rayson Cacal ran for four touchdowns against
Kapa’a, but how he did it.
Three of the sophomore’s four rushing scores in
the Menehunes’ 62-14 junior varsity victory Friday night went for 40 yards or
more. And the middle two covered 71 and 80 yards respectively.
Cacal’s
efforts, along with those of the rest of the Waimea team, took any hope of a
homecoming victory away from the Warriors (2-3).
In fact, because of the
dominating display of the starting unit, Menehunes’ coaches were able to give
plenty of playing time to the reserves.
Waimea (5-0) got on the board early
in the first quarter, when freshman Michael Yaris recovered a blocked punt in
the end zone for the score. Corey Rita connected on the first of his eight
extra points to put the Menehunes ahead 7-0.
Five minutes later, Cacal
began his end zone onslaught. At the 2:20 mark, he ran for a nine-yard score.
Then, with seven second remaining in the first, the tailback peeled off the
71-yarder. With 1:19 to go in the first half, Cacal went back to work, hustling
80 yards for the score, and a 27-0 Waimea lead.
Cacal capped his scoring
with a 41-yarder at the 8:15 mark of the third quarter.
Just one minute
later, Waimea receiver Oliver Moniz caught a nine-yard TD pass. Two minutes
after that, sophomore Kelsey Kaohi got into the act, rushing 78 yards to the
end zone, and a 48-0 Menehunes lead.
Waimea’s Tyson Fernandez scored from
16 yards out at the 9:05 mark of the fourth quarter, and it seemed everyone
might get in on the act.
Finally, with 6:55 remaining in the game, Kapa’a
got on the board when quarterback Kendall Maglinti found Brian Merkie for a
19-yard touchdown. Gabe Sarsona added the extra point, making the score 55-7.
But the Menehunes weren’t finished. Dustin Arthur bulldozed in from five
yards out to make it 62-7 with the Rita kick. Then, with just seconds
remaining, Maglinti found Kanalu Hawelu on a 34-yard pass for the score.
Sarsona added the point after to end the scoring.
