Behold the taro plant, so beloved that it has its own festival.
Beginning
next Tuesday and continuing through Friday, the fourth annual Taro Festival
will do its best to remind Kauaians of taro’s place in the commodities and
culture of the island.
As might be expected for an event sponsored by
Kaua’i Taro Growers Association, there is an agricultural theme for the four
days of activities. People can learn how to grow taro, propagate native
Hawaiian plants, tour taro farms in Hanalei, and find out the best ways to
improve and nurture soil for growing the stuff.
For instance, did you know
that using the perennial peanut as a permanent ground cover can control weeds
on taro banks? You will after attending a presentation on that very subject on
Friday in the Hanalei Elementary School cafeteria.
That and other
mind-expanding information awaits one and all. Power to the taro.
