Less than a month after it started, the Adopt-a-Cop program has produced
donations of 60 new portable radios for Kaua’i Police patrol
officers.
Kapa’a resident Gregg Smith and his brother, Shawn, one of the
officers, launched the community-based program in September. Businesses and
organizations were asked to donate money for buying the hand-held
radios.
Within a few weeks, the goal of 60 radios – each costing $2,546 –
was reached.
“Every beat officer will now have his or her own radio,” said
police chief George Freitas. “It makes our ability to communicate and respond
that much more efficient.”
Mayor Maryanne Kusaka noted that the officers
who will use the radios are “the heart and soul of our police
force.”
Donors of the radios will present them to police officers in a
ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m. Oct. 20 at JJ’s Broiler in Nawiliwili.
