Catherine E. Shanahan, M.D., has joined Kalaheo Clinic as a full-time family
practice physician. Born in Centra, Penn., Shanahan attended Rutgers University
on a track scholarship, and received her doctorate degree from the University
of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.
While doing her three-year
family-practice residency at the University of Arizona at Tucson, she met her
husband Luke, who was finishing up his master’s degree in writing at the same
school.
After visiting the island on vacation, they decided to relocate.
Upon learning that the Kalaheo Clinic had an opening for a family-practice
doctor, Shanahan (she’s called “Catey” by friends and family) decided to accept
the position.
Her father, Dr. Paul Shanahan, is an internist at the
Veterans Affairs Hospital in Syracuse, New York, where her mother serves on a
number of local boards and advisory councils. From her parents’ examples, Dr.
Catherine Shanahan saw that a dedicated physician can help people to live
healthier lives, and how being involved in the community can make a positive
difference.
Practicing family medicine in Kalaheo will allow her to meet
patients one-on-one, and get to know them and their community. She has a
brother and two sisters who like Dr. Catherine Shanahan love the outdoors. In
her spare time, she enjoys jogging, hiking, swimming and mountain biking.
