Outrage is not a strong enough word to describe the reaction to a recent
incident of animal cruelty on Kaua’i.
Someone walked into the back yard of
a home in Kapahi, leaned into a kennel where a 7-month-old golden retriever was
penned and shot the dog in one eye and its nose with a pellet gun. The animal
lost its eye in the attack, and three pellets are still imbedded in its
nose.
There are no known suspects for this senseless and horrifying act.
But if the shooter and/or accomplices are caught, the book should be thrown at
them. Unfortunately, the book is pretty light. Cruelty to animals is a
misdemeanor and carries a maximum jail sentence of one year.
Animal lovers
would like stiffer penalties, and maybe they can get them if the Legislature
can be convinced to go for a stronger law. Until then, whoever shot the Kapahi
dog — and whoever commits other violent acts of animal cruelty — should know
that they are contemptible and miserable human beings.
