A Kaua’i Fire Department firefighter was sent to Wilcox Memorial Hospital for
treatment yesterday morning following what police said was a head-on collision
between two pickup trucks on Kaumuali’i Highway near the Knudsen Gap In
Kipu.
The accident slowed traffic to a crawl and stopped it in certain
places between Kalaheo and the Knudsen Gap on the state highway for 90 minutes
before normal traffic flow was resumed, according to Kaua’i Police.
The
medical condition and name of the injured firefighter, who was on his way to
work yesterday morning, were not released.
The firefighter was coherent
after the accident, said police officer Robert Castro, who helped investigate
the crash.
The other driver was not injured and didn’t require medical
attention, Castro said.
According to police, the two trucks were traveling
in opposite directions on the highway between 7:15 and 7:30 a.m. when the
collision occurred, forcing both vehicles to come to a grinding halt against a
guardrail in an eastbound lane.
