Presidential debate have struck out on two national television networks. But
don’t read too much into what initially seems like out-of-kilter
priorities.
When Al Gore and George W. Bush square off Oct. 3 in their
first of a series of televised point-counterpoints, NBC will broadcast a Major
League Baseball playoff game, as required by contract. And Fox will show some
of its regular entertainment programming.
That would be a serious slap at
presidential politics if the country was suddenly stripped of much of its
ability to see the debate. But with the proliferation of cable TV and Internet
coverage, plus the tried and true print media, there are plenty of ways to
witness the debate or find out how it went. So on with the talk, the game and
the shows. There’s room for all.
