Some of Dutch Medford’s best sleuthing has come since he quit working as a
police officer. And for that, he’s now a shining example of aloha.
Medford,
using his trusty metal detector, estimates he has retrieved and returned to
their owners nearly $500,000 worth of jewelry and coins misplaced on the
beaches of Kaua’i. His rescues included a priceless, 500-year-old family
heirloom ring that a visitor lost while rescuing his wife from the surf off
Po’ipu last year. That recovery by Medford has been featured on national cable
television on The Dicovery Channel.
His efforts, which are motivated by his
desire to reunite people with prized belongings, last week earned him the 2000
Aloha Spirit Award from the Kaua’i Chamber of Commerce. Chamber officials said
Medford’s ways are “an inspiration.” We’ll second that.
