Communities are always looking for ways to involve young people in wholesome,
constructive activities. 4-H fits the bill, as an entire nation will be
reminded next month.
National 4-H Week – Oct. 1-7 – will celebrate 6.6
million children and the 631,000 volunteers who participate in programs. Their
goal is to strengthen youth involvement and youth-adult partnerships aimed at
making their communities better places for everyone.
One way that happens
is through volunteerism. Last year alone, 217,000 children hooked up with 4-H’s
“Are You Into It?” campaign of community service.
In Hawai’i, 1,180
children – including about 100 on Kaua’i – were active in 4-H club events in
1999. Another 20,000 or so were reached statewide through 4-H affiliated school
enrichment programs oriented toward agriculture.
Anyone 5 to 18 years old
can join non-formal education programs conducted by University of Hawai’i,
College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resourcdes, the Cooperative Extension
Service and 4-H Youth Development. The telephone number on Kaua’i for more
information is 274-3471. For youths and their communities, it might be one of
the best calls they ever make.
