The message from legal authorities on Kaua’i is loud and clear: Sexual assaults on this island will not be tolerated.
For this attitude, islanders can thank, among others, Kaua’i County prosecuting attorney Michael Soong and the state attorney general for focusing funds and attention on treatment of victims and investigations of sex crimes.
The result has been speedier, yet sensitive examinations of victims that can help catch and punish offenders.
And justice is occurring, make no mistake. All signs are that cases of sexal assault are being aggressively prosecuted, with Shaylene Iseri-Carvalho, the deputy prosecutor who handles them, on the front line.
Sexual assaults are absolutely unacceptable. They damage or destroy the lives of individual victims and trouble entire communities. The zero-tolerance of authorities is 100 percent correct.
