Just as the historic fishpond on Robinson family property between Makaweli and
Waimea had many uses (habitat for fish and fowl, irrigation for nearby family
acreage, fish for food, etc.), a try-pot (foreground in photo at right) once
used aboard whaling ships to store oil from blubber on Robinson land was used
as a feeder for cows. The family filled the pot with molasses, which the cows
liked because it was sweet. It also made the cows thirsty for water they drank
which made them healthier. Scott Ezer, of the firm Helber Hastert & Fee,
Planners, explains the pot, fishpond and other significant sites during a field
trip to the 160-acre site planned for a 250-cabin resort. Above, the historic
Robinson family home Kapalawai (as seen from the beach) will be restored to its
original grandeur as part of the project. Please see another photo on 2-A.
