ANINI-Island Screen Specialists were chasing a 3-goal deficit at the end of the
third chukker, but racked up 4 goals in the final chukker to edge past
Halaulani All-Stars 5-4 in last Sunday’s polo matchup at the Anini Polo Field.
Halaulani went into the contest with a 1-goal handicap.
John Elwin opened
the scorebooks in the second chukker with just 30 seconds peeled off the
clock. At the bowl in, Hal Hargrave cleared the ball and started down the
field, but Elwin moved in, and with a back shot, drove the ball between the
pylons to score for Halaulani.
Hargrave took a knock in from the end line
for Island Screen, but with a back shot, Elwin backed the ball setting up a
shot for Greg Smith who scored for the All-Stars, delighting the fans with the
duel with Hargrave. At one point, Smith lost his mallet in an aggressive
hooking play.
Island Screen Specialist opened their scorebooks in the third
chukker as Kamalu Sheldon picked up a Hargrave run and scored with a deft
shot. The chukker was dominated by fast riding, hard charging, and hooking,
and it wasn’t until Hargrave missed a goal that a score emerged when the ball
went over the end line.
The fourth chukker belonged to Hargrave who had
spectators roaring approval for his style of play as he picked up the throw in
and scored.
Smith and Hargrave continued to provide thrills for the
spectators with their horsemanship and play with rough charging and hard
riding, but it was Hargrave who took control and rammed the ball through the
goal posts for his second goal in the chukker.
Hargrave continued his
domination by scoring two more times bringing his total to four scores in one
chukker to give Island Screen Specialist the 5-4 win at the bell.
