KIPU -Two California visitors and an Arizona woman were rescued yesterday after
they became stranded during flashflood conditions in the Hule’ia Stream by Kipu
Falls.
Between 11:45 and 12 noon, five other California visitors also
became stranded in the stream, but managed to make it to safe ground on their
own, the Kaua’i Fire Department said.
After authorities were notified, an
Air-1 Inter-Island helicopter airlifted the two California visitors to
safety.
The 53-year-old woman visitor from Arizona was swept over the falls
and broke a leg, according to a fire department spokesman.
The injured
woman was carried out of the falls area by some of the stranded visitors, the
spokesman said.
A 14-year-old local male was credited by Kaua’i police in
assisting in the rescue of the woman with the leg injury.
The visitors,
whose names weren’t released, ranged from three years of age to 59 years of
age.
Some of the visitors were treated by up to seven firefighters from
the Lihu’e Fire Station, including search and rescue personnel, who were sent
to the falls area to render aid.
Some of the visitors also were treated by
two American Medical Response paramedics.
