The Garden Island names new editor Pat Jenkins has been named editor of The Garden Island.
Jenkins is a veteran of 25 years in the newspaper and magazine industry. For the past five years, he was editor of the Port Orchard (Wash.) Independent, a twice-weekly newspaper in the Olympic Peninsula region west of Seattle. Previously, he was news editor for eight years of PickWorld magazine, a computer industry journal based in Irvine, Calif.
He also has worked as an editor or reporter for daily newspapers in Washington and Montana.
Jenkins, 45, is a Washington native. He and his wife, Laura, and their 6-year-old daughter, Dawn, are living in Lihue. His 18-year-old son, Rich, an automotive mechanic and student, lives in Washington.
Jenkins said he is looking forward to becoming involved in his new community through service and volunteer organizations. In Port Orchard, he was a member of Rotary, volunteered in schools and community events, and was a member of citizen advisory boards for a county voters pamphlet, a state corrections work-release facility and a park district’s skateboard center. He also served on the board of directors of an alcohol and drug treatment center.
In addition, he has coached youth sports.
Jenkins, who officially began his duties at The Garden Island July 10, said the newspaper will expand its news coverage through the addition of reporters and a sports editor within the next month. An increased opinion section and other enhancements also are planned.
