WAIKOLOA, Hawai`i—Rachel Kyono qualified for one of four alternate slots to
the USGA Junior Girls’ Championship at Pumpkin Ridge in Portand, Oregon from
July 31 through August 5.
Low qualifier for the event was Darene Matsuoka
who topped a field of 34 girls at the Kings’ Course. Also qualifying were
Meryn Ito, Joan Shimozaki, Amanda Wilson, Leah Whiting, and Kira-Ann
Murashige.
Alternates were Kyono, Tristilynn Tomono, Christine Kim, and
Michelle Wie, at age 10, the youngest player in the qualifier.
This year,
the USGA Junior, and Girls’ Junior are being held at the same time in the same
place at Pumpkin Ridge’s Witch Hollow and Ghost Creek courses with travel
assistance for the girls being done through a travel scholarship from the
Hawai`i State Women’s Golf Association.

Castillo (Planos) captured these championships the last time the tournament was
held together.
Dayna Park’s hole-in-one at the 116-yard 15th hole was one
highlight of this year’s qualifier that had a field of 38 boys qualifying for
the USGA Junior tournament.
Jordon Cox of age of Lihu`e, at 11 years is the
youngest boy trying to qualify.
Following a 3-way playoff for the lead
qualifying slot, Jarett Hamamoto and Laine Malson, both of Hilo, edged out
Kalani Kahalekulu of Maui by birdie-ing the 5th hole while Kahalekulu
par-ed.
Par for the girls is 72 at 5,914 yards while par for the boys is 72
at 6,725 yards.
