ELEELE— Senior softball players got a week’s rest before returning to the
diamond at the Eleele Field where West Kaua`i slipped past the K-Malues 11-8 in
the day’s opener; the Rookies blanked Kawaihau 20-0, and the Lihu`e A’s
controlled East Kaua`i 13-5.
Frank Bukoski went the distance for West
Kaua`i to claim the victory against K-Makules’ Dado Paiste who suffered the
loss in his all-game performance.
Mike Flostor and Danny Manus picked up 3
hits with Pat Patricio being the sole West Kauaian to pair hits.
Lefty
Remata and John Tabonair led the K-Malules’ bats with each batter conking a
home run on 2 hits apiece. Dado Paiste and Ernie Domingo also chalked up 2
hits in the outing.
The Rookies’ Archie Fontanilla had four hits in picking
up the victory over Kawaihau.
Nelson Mendonca led the Rookies’ bats with a
3-run homer while Wally Sonoda had a 3-hit day. Ray Espino, Fontanilla, and
Doric Remata all paired hits.
Kawaihau’s four hits in the game were
credited to Paul Awazu, Louie Victorino, Ted Tamashiro, and Louie
Nuesca.
Buster Matsumura picked up the win for the Lihu`e A’s while Ronnie
Holt and Walter Silva worked the mound for East Kaua`i, Holt eventually being
charged for the loss.
Tomo Hiranaka whacked a pair of home runs in his
perfect 3-for-3 performance behind the plate for the Lihu`e A’s with Glen Akina
adding another homer. Chic Cacabelas chalked up a pair of hits along with Alex
Youn who had a 2-run homer in his tally.
Les Kubo, Damien Victorino, Holt,
and John Garcia paired hits for East Kaua`i.
Shige Oshiro of the Lihu`e A’s
prevented any scoring by East Kaua`i with a reach-over-the-fence third-out snag
that stranded two men for East Kaua`i.
The Rookies lead the second round
with a 5-0 standing following Saturday s outing with West Kaua`i at 4-1.
Lihu`e A s are 3-2, East Kaua`i 2-3, K-Makules 1-4, and Kawaihau
0-5.
Saturday, June 10 games move to Kapa`a with East Kaua`i hosting the
K-Makules. The league-leading Rookies will meet West Kaua`i in the second
contest, and Kawaihau hosts the Lihu`e A’s in the finale.
