LIHUE — The Kaua’i Police Department is asking the public to be wary of
accepting $5 and $20 bills following the seizure last week of about $200 in
counterfeit bills from businesses in Lihu’e and Kapa’a.
“It has been
heavy,” said Lt. Bill Ching, who heads KPD’s Adult Investigations Section.
“We want the public to be aware.”
All of the counterfeit $20 bills,
which have been issued recently, have the same serial number. The number is
Al21339236.
They also are lacking a magnetic strip on the left side and a
watermark on the right side.
People with questions about money they have in
their possession can contact KPD’s Adult Investigations Section at
241-6763.
Store owners are checking the bills electronically to ensure
their integrity, Ching said.
The bills are of the new $20 bills that have
the face of former President Andrew Jackson off-center.
The FBIis being
summoned to investigate the matter, Ching said.
