HANAMA’ULU—A brisk offshore wind and gray clouds threatened the 13th Annual
Kaua’i Business Canoe Race, and that threat was made more ominous as a squall
blew in with the winds, but that could not dampen the spirits of the 75 teams
and their supporters as race organizers moved through the heats with flawless
efficiency.
The overwhelming spirit of fun and fellowship drew the
attention of the morning sun that quickly burned through the gray clouds and
added its warmth to the breezes that slapped the shorebreaks, adding a sense of
excitement to the launching of the canoes positioned in four lanes.
Several
canoes spilled in the shorebreaks on the launch adding more excitement to the
overall competition as spectator and race team tents lined the sand perimeter
of Hanama’ulu Bay where they enjoyed the race.
Overall, there was no
dominant team as teams battled the wind chop on a course that ran head-first
onto the beach.
