LIHU`E -The Kapa`a High School Warriors mounted an 8-2 point run in the first
four minutes of play enroute to exploding to a 53-35 victory over the Kaua`i
High School Red Raiders on Tuesday night.
Defensive jockeying opened the
night until Jordyn Danner picked the Raiders’ pocket and broke the ice on a
breakaway play that was quickly followed by a Kainani Torio basket and another
by Trichael Pangan.
Danner struck again as a come-from-behind pick of Cissy
Dennis’ upcourt delivery resulted in another bucket while the Raiders struggled
to tickle the twine.
These three Lady Warriors would lead the offensive
show that saw Kapa`a steadily gain ground despite being outgunned by Kaua`i
13-10 in the second quarter of play.
Danner was kept free of the free throw
line, and topped all scorers with a game-high 16 points followed by Torio and
Pangan with 8 points apiece in the Warrior win.
Warrior coach Michael Ban
substituted freely, testing his bench for experience while allowing his
starting five a chance to spectate while on the other side of the scorer’s
table, Raider coaches Penny Vess and Dennis Aquino struggled to find a working
court combination.
Kapa`a’s Ihilani Yama charged off the bench to provide
the burst of court speed needed to tangle with the powerful Raider guards, and
despite being relegated to the outer fringes of the court, Yama contributed 4
points in the win.
Foul shots were a sore spot with the Lady Warriors as
they took the line on 6 attempts in the game only to sink 1, that point coming
from Ashley Farias who was 1-for-4 on the charity line.
The Raiders, on the
other hand, went 6-for-10.
Alisa Racelo, the Raiders’ playmaker, was held
scoreless despite heavy playing time, and Dennis, the other Raider guard, was
held to just a bucket and a charity pair throughout the night.
Erin Garle
came off the bench after several switches between Raider forwards and surged to
high point honors with 12 points for Kaua`i.
Kaua`i’s final straw broke
when their center Misty Hug was taken out on an ankle injury after securing
numerous defensive rebounds and contributing four points.
Keying on
midcourt, the Warriors capitalized heavily on Raider turnovers to quickly build
a 20-4 first quarter showing, the score almost double of their game average to
date.
Kaua`i’s Elisa Inouye, Hug, and Garlie combined to lead the Raiders
to their best quarter, outscoring the Warriors 13-10, but still nursing a
13-point deficit going into the locker rooms.
Inouye came back into the
battle early in the third period, going 4-2 against Danner, and Sarah Sakimae
tapping paydirt as one of the post people.
Torio answered, and a foot
inside the 3-point line gave Dennis a pair instead of a trey. Torio answered
with another bucket to launch a 6-0 point run to the buzzer and a 42-25 Kapa`a
nod.
LeeAnne Cox came off the bench with a three-pointer, but the effort
came too late as the clock showed less than a minute to play and the Warriors
holding a 51-33 lead.
Yama iced the victory for Kapa`a with 28 seconds
showing followed by a Garlie bucket for the 53-35 final at the buzzer.
The
KIF girls basketball game normally scheduled for Friday will move to Saturday
evening, April 29 due to the KIF Track Meet at Vidinha Stadium.
The Waimea
Menehunes travel to the Bernice Hundley Gym to meet up with the
Warriors.
JV tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. with the varsity game
following twenty minutes following completion of that game.
