KAPA’A—The Kapa’a High School Warriors maintained a balanced scoring pace and
went freely to their bench as they kept the visiting Waimea High School
Menehunes at bay before nailing down a 48-33 win to open the second round of
KIF girls basketball.
Jordyn Danner who tallied a game-high 17 points in
the win, chalked up 10 of her game total in the final stanza when the Warriors
went to Ingrid Nakamura who ended the night with four second-half
points.
Waimea’s Ashley Hori brought the Menehunes into the melee and ended
the night with their high point honors on a 10-point showing.
Danner lit up
the boards early for Kapa’a, but Waimea’s Jennifer Fukino pulled Waimea close
on a 3-pointer only to have the Warriors respond as Waiala Quisano and Ashley
Farias each tucked in a basket for an 8-3 bulge before Waimea coach Pedro
Saligumba called a timeout to settle the girls.
The move worked as Robyn
Ho’opii Manuel chucked another trey to bring Waimea back into the game with a
2-point deficit only to have Kapa’a answer with a follow-up field goal by
Kainani Torio.
With less than a minute left in the quarter, Hori
tapped back-to-back buckets, including the last one with 6.6 seconds showing,
to knot the game 11-11 at the buzzer.
Another Hori field goal
opened up the second quarter on a Waimea positive note as the Menehunes looked
at a 13-11 lead.
This would be Waimea’s finest moment as the Warriors
roared back to hold the Menehunes to just another field goal throughout the
period and take a 24-15 halftime lead into the lockers.
The third quarter
opened with another Hori bucket, but in the ensuing six minutes, the Warriors
mounted a 10-2 point run until Waimea discovered the shooting of Sunny Dela
Cruz and Charis Castillo who tucked in a pair of field goals apiece in the last
two minutes to end the quarter with a 9-point deficit.
Danner lit up the
boards in the final frame as she accounted for 10 of the warriors’ 14-point
total with Ashley Farias icing the win seconds before the buzzer.
Hori
topped the Waimea scoring with ten points followed by Castillo with 6, Manuel
Hoopii with 5, Dela Cruz with 4. Sherlyn Alcon added 3, and Erica Iwai, who
worked the entire night, picked up a pair in the final quarter.
Danner’s 17
points topped the Kapa’a scoring with Quisano adding 9, and Farias chipping in
8 points. Torio ended the night with 6 points, and Mytra Dileonardo and
Nakamura each added 4.
The Kaua’i High School Red Raiders take the show on
the road Thursday night because of the Good Friday holiday.
They take on
the Waimea Menehunes (0-1) with the JV contest tipping off at 5:30 p.m. at the
Clem Gomes Gym. The varsity contest starts twenty minutes following the close
of the JV game.
