Warriors wrapped up a 4-0 first round in KIF girls’ basketball, but not before
getting a scare from the Kaua’i High School Red Raiders at the Kaua’i High
School gym on Friday night.
The Lady Warriors had to dig deep and came back
with an explosive fourth quarter to wrap up a 62-48 victory and an unblemished
first round.
Jordyn Danner fueled the Lady Warriors in the opening
frame as she tapped 10 of the Warriors’ 16 points with Trichael Pangan and Erin
Hanada rounding out the Kapa’a scoring.
Capitalizing on a Danner
bench break early in the second period, and the Kaua’i offensive fire being
stoked by having Mytra Dileonardo benched with an ankle injury, the Red
Raiders trimmed a 16-8 first quarter deficit, and pulled ahead 19-18 on a
Cissy Dennis left pocket shot with 4:21 in the half.
Ashley Farias
came off the bench for Kapa’a to bring the Lady Warriors to within a pair 24-26
at the 1:30 mark, but Kaua’i’s Misty Hug bucketed one, and missed free throw
exchanges between Hug and Kanoe Arinaga ended the half with the Raiders holding
the 28-24 lead.
Hug and Alisa Racelo picked up a quick 5 points to
open the third frame, but the Warriors shut down the Raiders on a 8-2 point run
that ate up over four minutes, and a bucket by Farias seconds before the buzzer
regained the lead for the Warriors 36-35.
But, the Raiders did not
go down easy as Dennis and Racelo peppered the hoop with shots that would not
drop. Pangan and Waialana Quisano opened the final period of play and the
Warriors never looked back as they exploded for a 26-13 showing to lock up the
win.
Danner topped all scorers with 26 points including a trey, 8
field goals, and a 7-for-8 showing at the free throw line.
Pangan
was 2-for-5 at the charity stripe and picked up four field goals for a
10-point game with Ililani Yama exploding off the bench in the fourth period
for a trey and a pair of field goals for a 7-point contribution in the
win.
Farias and Kainani Torio added six points apiece and Quisano chipped
in five. Erin Hanada rounded out the scoring with a pair.
Balanced scoring
for the Raiders had two players with a dozen points and two more with 10-point
games in the loss.
Elisa Inouye balanced her scoring through two halves,
and Racelo had a pair of treys, two field goals, and was 2-for-2 at the line
for her dozen markers.
Dennis and Hug both ended with 10 points in the loss
with Sarah Sakimae and Kehau Regidore rounding out the Kaua’i scoring.
The
next KIF girls basketball game is scheduled for Tuesday, April 18 when the
Waimea Menehunes travel to the Bernice Hundley Gym in Kapa’a to kick off round
2.
Tip off for the JV game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. with the varsity
contest starting twenty minutes following the conclusion of that
game.
