] [] Our first winner is Ernie Ferreira’s [
href=”http://www.aloha.net/~g-e/”TARGET=_blank>”Welcome to the History of
Kalaheo” Web site] []. Ferreira’s Kalaheo site features page after page
of Kalaheo history timelines, photographs, Kalaheo memorabilia and interesting
historical tid bits. His home-spun project is a worthy example of what a Kauai
resident can do on the Net in providing accurate and insightful information
about local history.
On his home page Ferreira, a long-time Kalaheo resident, explains why he
developed the excellent Web site: Why the History of Kalaheo? Have you
ever wondered how and when this town started. Who was responsible for the idea
of homesteading and the many hard working people who’ve made it a great place
to live and visit. I feel very fortunate to have grown up in Kalaheo when I
did. A lot has changed through the years but the beauty remains and people
still have the Aloha for each other. With continued research and any welcome
help, I’m sure we’ll be able to gather more pieces to this puzzle. There’s
still a lot of photos, articles, maps, documents and stories out there. I need
your comments and help in obtaining additional information about this town’s
history. I feel Kalaheo is special because it has and will continue to be an
example of how the combination of various ethnic groups can live side by side
and work together as a community. A place many of us call “God’s Country”. An
estimate of Kalaheo’s 100 years would occur in 2006. I’ve based this on the
first phase map of homesteading, dated 1906. So let’s prepare for a great
celebration for “A Proud Day” (The meaning of Kalaheo).
