KAPA’A – The sound of bouncing basketballs punctuated by sharp commands
from coaches and the laughter of parents, siblings, and supporters overpowered
the biting cold that permeated the covered playing field at the Kapa’a Middle
School Saturday morning.
Kealii Rowland, assistant athletic director for
the Kapa’a Boys and Girls Club manned the timer that controlled two games
taking place on the semi-sheltered courts.
This was the first day of the
Eastside Termite and Mitey Mite basketball program that involves youngsters
between 6 and 9 years of age who get to play four 5-minute running time
quarters with their coaches allowed to take the court with them.
The entry
level basketball program provides youngsters with a feel for the game, and
parents are oftentime overcome with the antics of the aspiring
roundballers.
Rowland said the Eastside season runs each Saturday in April
through April 29 with Termite games starting at 9 a.m. and Mitey Mite games
starting from 11 a.m. All games are at the Kapa’a Middle School covered
