KAPA’A— A 27-year-old Kapa’a woman was treated at Wilcox Hospital for
second-degree burns to her feet following a fire Wednesday afternoon that
destroyed her home on Kuapapa Street.
The fire was extinguished by
firefighters from Kapa’a and Lihu’e nearly two hours after it was reported
about 4 p.m.
The woman, whose name was not released by Fire Department
officials, was injured during the fire, fled the house and was transported by
an American Medical Response ambulance to the hospital for treatment.
The
hospital declined to release information on the woman’s condition.
The
woman’s 38-year-old husband suffered a cut to his left elbow during the fire
and was driven to the hospital in a private vehicle.
A fire department
spokesman said the names of the property owners were not released because an
investigation into the cause of the fire has been started by the Kauai Fire
Department.
Firefighters responded to the fire at 3:52 p.m. and found the
center of the house engulfed in flames when they arrived at the scene six
minutes later. The fire was extinguished at 5:41 p.m.
Before the fire was
put out, the heat from the blaze caused slight damage to an adjoining house.
Firefighters subsequently watered down the home to prevent further
damage.
According to preliminary estimates, the fire caused $110,000 in
damages to the home and $45,000 in damages to contents of the home.
