LIHU’E — The Kaua’i AJA Baseball League fell into a three-team scramble for
the championship last Sunday at Vidinha Stadium.
The three teams all have
four wins — Hanapepe (4-1-1), Kalaheo (4-2-1) and Lihu’e (4-2).
Lihu’e
showed that it’s making a serious run at the title by beating Kalaheo
9-8.
Lihu’e’s last championship came in 1991.
In another game, Makaweli
halted Kapa’a 12-8.
Lihu’e 9, Kalaheo 8
Mike Cardinez clobbered a
two-run home run and a single, and he scored three runs to lead
Lihu’e.
Cardinez also came in as a relief pitcher to stop Kalaheo’s
ninth-inning rally to preserve the victory for Barry Kawamura.
Kawamura
slammed four hits for the winners.
Kalaheo’s Kainoa Santos finished the
game with four hits and two stolen bases, and teammate Liko Pereira came
through with three basehits.
Makaweli 12, Kapa’a 8
Makaweli got
big two-hit performances from Ikaika Pezario, Micah Furtado, Mike Shimatsu,
Scott Shimabukuro and Reid Tanita in the victory.
Kapa’a’s power hitters
came to play too. Sean Tamura muscled a solo home run, two RBI basehits and a
sacrifice fly.
Cy Tamura slugged two doubles for Kapa’a.
Championship Scenario
Who will win the championship?
Hanapepe
and Lihu’e can win the title by winning their final two games.
Kalaheo has
one more regular season game left, needing a victory and a Hanapepe loss for a
chance at the title.
Next Games
AJA baseball continues this Sunday
at Hanapepe Stadium.
In the 10 a.m. game, Hanapepe plays against
Kapa’a.
In the 1 p.m. game, Lihu’e takes on a challenge from
Makaweli.
In the season’s final weekend on Sunday, March 19 at Vidinha
Stadium, Kalaheo tangles with Makaweli at 10 a.m. and Hanapepe goes up against
Lihu’e at 1 p.m.
Playoffs, if needed, are scheduled for Saturday and
Sunday, March 25-26.I
