Cian Carvalho became the Hutchinson Community College all-time leading women’s
basketball scorer earlier this week.
Carvalho is a former Kapa’a High
School standout.
The Hutchinson Dragons women’s team – from the state of
Kansas – defeated Kansas City 84-53 to earn a trip to the Region 6
quarterfinals.
Carvalho scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the
game.
Carvalho passed Janay Vulgamore on the all-time list. She scored her
1,000th point on a free throw with 12:12 left in the first half. She finished
the night with 1,017 career points.
“That’s a great career accomplishment,”
Hutchinson coach Rob Edmisson said. “She has to be considered the best post
player in HCC history.”
Carvalho scored 10 of the Dragons’ first 25
points.
Hutchinson (24-7) was scheduled to meet Independence (24-7) in the
Region 6 quarterfinals yesterday.
“It’ll take everything we’ve got to beat
Independence,” Edmisson said.
