PO’IPU – A self-guided walking or driving tour along the South Shore could be
established by the end of this year, thanks to a $20,000 grant from the Hawai’i
Tourism Authority (HTA).
The Po’ipu Beach Resort Association recently got
notification from the HTA that the funds are forthcoming for the Po’ipu/Koloa
Cultural Heritage Program, said Margy Parker, PBRA executive director.
“The
concept of the program is to establish signage at select, significant cultural,
historical or geographical points of interest in the South Shore region and, at
the same time, create a visitor-friendly brochure pointing out these sights,”
she said.
“The point of the project being that the visitor will have a
driving or walking tour of significant points on the South Shore that will be
interpreted for them,” said Parker, who has started notifying people she thinks
might be interested in providing input and having certain sights designated for
inclusion in the tour.
In other South Shore news, Parker reported that a
number of Po’ipu properties and vacation rental firms have been running 90 to
100 percent full during certain periods this month.
February is normally a
busy month, but she is finding that this month is busier than most Februarys, a
result of direct flights to the island, marketing of the island, region and
individual properties and companies, Kaua’i being the beneficiary of high
demand, especially from the U.S. Mainland, and cold, snowy weather,
specifically across the Mainland Midwest and East Coast, Parker said.
