KAPA’A — The KIF softball season ended on Saturday with the Kapa’a Warriors
sweeping a doubleheader from the Kaua’i Red Raiders.
The win evened the
Warriors’ season record to 6-6. Kaua’i fell to 1-10.
Even though the Red
Raiders won just one game this year, they were competitive in most every
game.
Kapa’a won the opener 11-1, and then had to struggle back for a 4-2
come-from-behind victory in the second game.
Kapa’a 11, Kaua’i 1
Kaua’i
scored its only run in the first inning before Kapa’a struck back with six runs
in the bottom of the first.
The Warriors then finished the game on the
10-run mercy rule with six runs in the fifth inning.
Liza Gebauer singled
and eventually came home on a bases-loaded walk to Chantel Villatora for
Kaua’i’s only run in the first.
Hits by Russlyn Morita, Chelsie Labuguen,
Tihane Lopez and Jordyn Danner keyed Kapa’a’s six-run bottom-of-the-first
rally.
In the fifth-inning Warrior surge, Kaua’i High made three costly
errors, while Kapa’a’s Russlyn Morita, Lahela Laranio and Reveen Ornellas
provided the firepower with hits. Morita drove in two of the runs.
On the
mound, Cherisse Labuguen notched the win and Kaua’i’s Cecilia Quibilan took the
loss.
Kapa’a 4, Kaua’i 2
Once again, Kaua’i High scored first, pushing
home two runners in the first.
Rochelle Perreira, Villatora and Tyrene
Kaluahine led the way for for the 2-0 Raider lead with a single each.
But
the Raiders couldn’t score the rest of the way.
Kapa’a finally got on the
board in the fourth on Danner’s RBI ground out, cutting the gap to 2-1.
The
Warriors came on strong again in the final inning, scoring three runs to go up
4-2. Danner sparked the rally with a two-run triple for her second and third
RBI of the game. Danner also stole home for the final run.
Tiana Laranio
was the winning pitcher for the Warriors, and Quibilan suffered the tough
loss.
Perreira finished the game with two hits for the Red Raiders.
KIF
champion Waimea (10-1) will play in the state tournament in early
February.
