WAIMEA -Waimea Town throws the island’s biggest small town party on Friday,
Feb. 25 from 4:30 p.m. and Saturday, Feb. 26 from 10 a.m. Both nights until 11
p.m.
Each year visitors and residents look forward to the Waimea Town
Celebration that reflects the community’s plantation heritage with activities
and entertainment organized to appeal to all ages. Sporting events are a major
part of the event.
On Saturday visitors may participate in the 23rd annual
Captain Cook Caper 1, 5, 1OK Runs. Entry forms will be available Friday night.
Or make a day of it watching canoe races from the beach at the Paniolo
Challenge. The celebration site, fronting the old Waimea Sugar Mill, hosts
continuous island entertainment, food booths, the Coors Beer Garden, and a
couple of dozen game, craft and product booths. There is no admission charge
for spectators.
Saturday events include the 23rd annual Captain
Cook Caper 2, 6, and 10K Run starting at 7 a.m., the Kilohana Long Distance
Outrigger Canoe Race begins the race season at 9 a.m., the 1.5 Mile Rough Water
Swim at Salt Pond Reach Park Pavilion begins at 8 a.m., and the Paniolo
Challenge gets going at 11 a.m. with tests of skill for the island’s cowboys
and cowgirls.
The Men’s SlowPitch Softball Tournament starts late
afternoon Friday and continues into the evening and starts up again Saturday at
the Waimea Athletic Field.
Cultural events include the 3rd Annual ‘Ukulele
Competition on the stage at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday and the First Hawaiian Bank
sponsored Paniolo Hat Lei Contest at the West Kaua’i Technology and Visitor
Center. The Visitor Center will display the lei contest winners from noon – 9
p.m. on Friday and during regular hours 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.
The Waimea Town
Celebration is Kaua’i’s largest and oldest annual town festival, sponsored
since 1976 by West Kaua’i Business and Professional Association.
Major
sponsors are Paradise Beverages, Kikiaola Land Co., Waimea Plantation Cottages,
Pacific Missile Range Facility, ITT Industries, Malama Rentals, Kaua’i Veterans
Memorial Hospital and many other small businesses.
The event is dedicated
to providing non-profit community organizations and clubs the opportunity for
fundraising, while promoting community unity and economic development. Profits
go towards community projects sponsored by WKBPA including park improvements,
the Waimea Theatre restoration project, and the West Kaua’i Main Street
program.
