We have all witnessed the devastating impact that natural hazards have had on
our counties, both on our people and on our economies. The Hawai’i State Hazard
Mitigation Forum is spearheading a campaign to increase public awareness on how
to reduce risks to natural hazards.
The campaign will consist of public
service announcements for television and radio, brochures, newspaper and
billing inserts, and posters. Information will also be made available on-line
and at public libraries statewide.
Hurricane Iniki resulted in losses of
approximately $2.5 billion to homeowners, businesses and our economy. Two
months ago, the flooding in Hilo was catastrophic: 95 percent of the residents
affected by the torrential rains did not have flood insurance.
Let us work
together to prevent losses and suffering to our citizens as a result of natural
disasters.
